On February 5, 2014, the UNCG Faculty Senate passed a resolution to revise the parameters for courses that may be offered for general education credit. Effective at the start of the 2014-2015 academic year, courses that carry general education category designations must:

  1. Clearly address the General Education Program Learning Goals linked to the category designation requested.
  2. Be a standard offering (not an experimental course).
  3. Be open to all undergraduate students regardless of major.
  4. Be at the 100, 200, or, 300 level. Any pre- or co-requisite must carry a general education category designation.

By the same resolution, the Senate established that to be approved for the Global (GL) or Global Non-Western (GN) markers, courses must:

  1. Clearly address the General Education Program Learning Goals linked to the marker designation requested.
  2. Be a standard offering (not an experimental course).

Furthermore, courses that wish to carry the Writing Intensive (WI) or Speaking Intensive (SI) markers must:

  1. Clearly address the General Education Program Learning Goals linked to the marker designation requested.
  2. Be a standard offering (not an experimental course).

Courses that currently carry general education category or marker designation but that currently do not conform to the above parameters must be modified to conform to the parameters in order to achieve recertification for the designation requested.

All courses carrying a General Education categories or markers must allow students to demonstrate achievement of the General Education Program category‐ or marker‐specific Student Learning Outcomes through graded assignments. The approved Student Learning Outcomes for each category and marker can be found here and under the SLOs tab above.
