As we approach Spring Break, students are stressed; we’re stressed; and constructive communication may be becoming more difficult. The following are several options for communicating with students depending on your comfort level and goals.

  • The Reflect App, available on your MS365 account, lets you set up check-ins with students about how they’re feeling that day, but also easily poll students about a host of other subjects.
  • If it fits into your class subject matter, incorporate information about burnout and its prevention into your class – which provides an opportunity to ask students how they’re feeling about their own well-being and to take stock of such. The University of Waterloo Pharmacy Program has provided information and research about their activity, “Check-In”.
  • As stress levels rise in the middle of the semester, email communication can be more difficult. Inside Higher Ed has insights and advice on compassionate student emails and Higher Ed Jobs discusses how to write emails with clarity and kindness.
