Teaching Observations

Consider a course observations using standardized, research-based observation protocols. The UTLC offers two confidential course observations types: in-person course and Canvas course reviews (popular for online courses).

Coffee Houses and Biergartens

The UTLC provides space for instructors to gather in an informal and collegial setting throughout the academic year. Coffee houses are held frequently throughout the semester and biergartens help celebrate the end of each semester.

Department Head/Chairs/Director Gatherings and Workshops

Offered monthly, these gatherings offer Department Heads, Chairs, and Directors the opportunity to examine campus policy and processes, academic leadership, and emerging topics within education. Gatherings are anchored by Head/Chair/Director Retreats offered in December and May.

NFP focuses on builds peer networks, highlighting UNCG’s unique teaching culture, and promoting faculty success.

Post Bacc in College Teaching

Use your faculty/staff tuition benefits to complete the Post Baccalaureate Certificate in College Teaching.

Engaging current postsecondary educators and emerging educators, the Certificate provides a flexible and experiential learning space to meet these shifts and prepare for the challenges of the future. Aligning with the CAST Universal Design for Learning Framework, the Certificate examines how trends in education, evolving student needs, and emerging technology (e.g. generative AI, adaptive learning) will influence the modern classroom.

Teaching Effectiveness

The Teaching Effectiveness Policy outlines minimum campus requirements for evaluating teaching practice at UNCG. The policy addresses three areas: course evaluations, peer review, and self-reflection. The policy intersects with the Policy and Regulation on Faculty Workload and requires professional development on teaching be included in faculty work plans. The UTLC will be providing campus workshops and support as unit-level processes are developed.

VOISES Panels

Viewpoints of Inclusive Student Experiences (VOISES) panels offer a conversation about key UNCG student experiences in the classroom and beyond. These panels provide a venue for educators to hear the perspective of students about their experiences on campus and learning more about how to support their success.

Vector Learning Options

The UTLC is proud to collaborate with Vector Solutions to provide faculty and staff with flexible, on-demand learning opportunities. These online, research-based workshops cover a range of essential topics, including search committee practices and accessibility strategies. Designed to fit busy schedules, most workshops take approximately two hours to complete. Upon completion, participants receive a certificate of recognition from the Office of the Provost.

LinkedIn Learning Options

LinkedIn Learning is an online educational platform that provides access to over 16,000 videos and 5,000 courses on various topics created by experts in the field. UNCG instructors, staff, and students can review the videos and complete courses as part of UNCG courses or for professional development. Course completion can be documented on your personal LinkedIn profile. The UTLC has created a series of LinkedIn Learning playlists aimed at teaching and learning for UNCG instructors. Please note that LinkedIn Learning requires UNCG credentials.

Magna Publications

Magna Publications offers a series of 20-minute and 40-minute workshops on teaching and learning topics from national experts in teaching and learning.

In this Canvas site, the UTLC has secured campus access to over 20 trainings on topics such as teaching effectiveness, generative AI, student engagement, course design, and much more.

November 2025: Accessibility Incubator II

In preparation for campus compliance with Title II of the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, join the UTLC and campus partners for a second offering of the accessibility retrofitting incubator. Bring your course and work directly with campus experts to ensure your courses are accessible and compliant before spring 2026! We’ll bring the snacks.

May: In the FIrst Institute

Are you teaching a 100/200 level course? A student’s first semester is critical to their academic success – courses that are “In the First!” inning of the academic career set up the whole game.  

This daylong Institute focuses on the unique teaching needs of 100/200 level courses. Participants will learn more about our incoming students, how to prepare for their unique needs, and the tools available to you for supporting them.

May: Student Experience Project

Wondering about how students experience your courses? Do you use student data to make course-level changes? Curious on incorporating student voices in your course/curriculum planning? Join Student Success and the UTLC for the Student Experience Project Institute!

This daylong Institute focuses exploring the student experience through data. Participants will explore existing campus data on student needs and learning, how to use course-level and campus data to make changes to your courses, and more.

May: AI Institute

Join us for the 3rd Annual AI Institute! Are you curious about generative AI? Do you want to learn more about how AI is being used by students and your colleagues? Worried about the role AI plays in learning? Join the UTLC and campus partners for an interactive day with generative AI.

Held in-person, the AI Institute offers the campus community an opportunity to come together to engage in critical dialogues, learn from one another, and explore emerging concepts for AI literacy.

May: General Education Institute

The annual UDL Institute held in August is an opportunity to come together with colleagues to dive into supporting UNCG students through Universal Design for Learning (UDL). The Institute concludes with lunch and a great conversations.

August: New Faculty Orientation

Offered the week before classes begin each August, generally on Monday, New Faculty Orientation (NFO) is a signature kickoff event. NFO welcomes new faculty and instructors to campus, builds peer networks, and highlights the unique teaching needs of UNCG and our students.

August: Graduate Teaching Associate Orientation

The Graduate School and the UTLC have partnered to provide Graduate Teaching Associates (GTAs) with a daylong orientation to teaching at UNCG. Offered the Thursday before classes begin in both fall and spring, GTAs will learn about the foundational elements of teaching, accessibility, and student success.
