Universal Design for Learning (UDL) is a research-based framework and philosophy that aims to create accessible and engaging learning environments by reducing barriers and increasing access for all learners. Originating from the broader philosophy of Universal Design (UD)—which is applied in fields like architecture and medicine—UDL promotes flexibility and responsiveness in education to foster success for diverse learners.

CAST, a nonprofit leader in the development of UDL principles, created a practical framework that supports educators in “improving education through flexible methods and materials.” At the UTLC, we offer workshops, programs, and consultations to help faculty incorporate UDL principles and strategies into their teaching practices. We invite you to explore these opportunities to enhance learning spaces at UNCG.

Annual UDL Institute

The UTLC offered our first UDL Institute in May 2023, introducing UDL as a philosophy and the role of UDL in accessibility. Our second UDL Institute, coming in August 2025, will expand our UDL conversation and focus on practically applying the UDL 3.0 framework in your learning space.

The UTLC offers a variety of programs supporting UDL on campus.
