We hope you had a restful Labor Day weekend! In the spirit of celebrating our work, let’s consider how we can help students recognize that the meaningful work they do in class also prepares them for their futures. The tips below draw on NACE’s “The Value of Faculty Connecting Classroom Lessons to Career Success”.
- Start small. You do not need to redesign your entire course to help students see meaning in their work. One intentional conversation, a revised assignment prompt, or a reflection question can help students better articulate the value of what they are learning.
- Name the skills already at work. Before or after an assignment, explicitly identify the career-ready skills students are practicing. This can include critical thinking, communication, teamwork, technology, or adaptability.
- Add a quick “skills reflection.” Ask students: What did you do? How did you do it? Where else could this skill be useful in your career? A brief reflection helps make learning and growth visible.
- Connect coursework to real work. Explain how professionals in your field approach similar tasks, helping students recognize how assignments build collaboration, problem-solving, and communication skills.
By making these connections explicit, you can help students see themselves not only as learners but as emerging professionals, collaborators, and contributors in their communities.
