This week we present the next tip in our “What’s Working” video series created by UNCG instructors, for UNCG instructors. Each video will be under 5 minutes and features tips you can immediately implement in your classroom.

In this week’s video, Assistant Professor of Kinesiology, Judy Fowler, shares several examples of using collaborative concept maps to help students make connections between conceptual knowledge and factual knowledge and engage in metacognitive reflection about their learning in the course. This is a great way to start conversations with your students and check for understanding in a low-stakes setting. Here are a few other related resources to inspire new ways to connect with your students:

  • Video: Derek Bruff Talks Visual Learning Tools – Derek Bruff talks about the importance of using different modalities to help your students learn your course content.
  • Using concept maps – helpful resource from Carnegie Mellon’s Eberly Center for Teaching Excellence and Educational Innovation
  • Multiple Means of Action and Expression (University of Regina) through concept maps and other forms following the Universal Design for Learning Principles, meaning all learners can benefit from having different ways to represent their knowledge in the classroom
