Teaching Tips | Midterm Grades

Posted on September 12, 2023

This week’s tips focus on preparing for midterm grades, which you can now start entering in UNCGenie through September 22.

  • Why do we have midterm grades? Midterm grades help direct students to action by providing valuable insights into their academic performance. To ensure our students receive the support they need to succeed, consider referring any students who may benefit from additional assistance to our tutoring, academic success, and academic advising resources.
  • When and how to submit midterm grades. You will submit midterm grades for all students in your full-term undergraduate courses (graduate and part-of-term courses are exempt). Midterm grades will open Monday, 9/11 and close Friday at midnight on 9/22. Midterm grades are entered in UNCGenie in the same way as final grades. You can find complete instructions for submitting midterm grades on the Registrar’s website. If you do not have formal assessments at this point in the semester to determine a midterm grade, please use other indicators such as student engagement, non-graded materials, and/or attendance as a proxy for their performance. Please prioritize this task as it significantly impacts their academic progress and our retention efforts.
  • Speaking with your students about midterm grades. It is important to have a conversation with your students before and potentially after they receive their midterm grades. You may wish to convey this information in a Canvas announcement or make time for a brief discussion during class. It is helpful to explain the purpose of the midterm grade policy and help cultivate a growth mindset by connecting students with resources so they can improve or maintain their grades. You may also want to remind students that they can visit you during office hours to discuss their progress and make a plan for success in your course.
