Teaching Tips | Starting the Semester off Strong

Posted on August 15, 2023

Welcome back! This weeks teaching tips feature important updates, resources, and reminders to help start your semester off strong.

  • Building community. Teaching and learning are relational endeavors, so it is important to build community early and often in your courses. Amy Brown shares an activity from our What’s Working video series to get your students talking and connected in the first week of class. We also recommend incorporating a welcome survey (template for UNCG instructors) to get to know your students and see where they may need support throughout the semester.
  • Syllabus and other Fall 2023 Updates. The UNCG Syllabus Template has been updated to include new, required language for mid-term grades in addition to other statements and sections to include in your syllabi in line with the UNCG’s Syllabus Policy. In addition, we recommend reviewing the August 4 Message to the Faculty from the Provost, including a short video message, and the July 12 Provost’s Announcement: Preparation for Teaching in Fall 2023 – Teams, AI, Canvas and Syllabi Updates to make sure you’re in the know for this fall!
  • Find your well-being here Canvas Commons Module. As part of creating a culture of care at UNCG, this brief module gives students information and access to an array of well-being resources. A video tutorial is available along with written step-by-step instructions. Consider adding this to your courses this fall and letting students know how to use this resource in the first week!
