Teaching Tips | Student Focus Group Summary and Making Space for Conversation

Posted on February 07, 2023

For this week’s teaching tips, we wanted to take a moment to share important takeaways and strategies from our recent student focus groups to learn more about what keeps our students motivated, moving forward and successful at UNCG. Below is a summary of the major takeaways:

  1. Students are using a variety of strategies to keep themselves motivated to focus on their studies.
  2. Students are taking notes and studying in a variety of ways.
  3. Most students don’t feel comfortable asking questions during class sessions.
  4. Students will use academic support services and tools, but need faculty to incentivize them for the initial contact.
  5. Students crave a connection with their faculty members in their classes.

We encourage you to watch the latest What’s Working video on making space for conversation with your students by Art professor, Barbara Campbell Thomas. This will allow you to have similar discussions with your students this semester to meet them where they are and create lasting connections.
