Generative AI

Generative Artificial Intelligence (GAI) is a subset of AI technologies that can create new content, ranging from text and images to music and code, based on learning from vast amounts of data. Rapidly evolving, generative AI platforms, like large language models – Copilot and ChatGPT – and image-based models like Adobe Firefly, are just the start. Preparing your students through AI Literacy, including evaluating, navigating, and ethically using generative AI, will become an essential skill.

As educators and instructors, you will determine how generative AI and other technology will be used or limited in your courses. It will be essential that you communicate early and often with your learners about the boundaries of generative AI in the learning space.

AI LIteracy Approach

Generative AI is being used heavily in industry and disciplines. It will be essential that our students develop an AI Literacy and become responsible users of AI platforms. Therefore, avoiding discussion about AI in our courses is likely not helpful and policing AI use is nearing impossible. AI Literacy offers a strong alternative to policing and detection approaches.

Exploring Gen AI

AI tools are being created faster than can be documented and the options can be overwhelming. UNCG has two officially-approved AI Tools, Copilot and Adobe Express, but faculty and instructors may wish to use other AI tools. The key to exploring generative AI is to find a tool that is useful to you. Learning more about generative AI, through LinkedIn Learning and other workshops, can help evaluate AI tools and find the ones that work for you.

Talking with Students about AI

Whether your students are experienced AI users or new to ChatGPT, they will need context for using AI in your discipline and course. Providing them with basic guidelines of what AI tool is acceptable, when using that AI tool is acceptable, how to use that AI tool ethically can help them avoid miss steps.

Generative AI is quickly becoming an essential tool for many disciplines and professions. It will becoming increasingly necessary to preparing our students to navigate an AI-enabled world with AI Literacy skills.

Sample Syllabus Statement

The UNCG Sample Syllabus provides sample AI course use statements ranging from complete exclusion of all AI use in a course to embedding AI fully in the course materials.

Faculty Examples

Campus Weekly developed a comprehensive look at projects developed through the 2024 AI Implementation Grants.

The article shares faculty/instructor perspectives on AI in their disciplines, including potential and challenges. Documenting the experiences of faculty/instructors in Theatre, Nursing, Media Studies, and Spanish, the article provides great examples of questions to ask and activities to consider when fostering AI Literacy in your courses.
