Teaching Tips | Jewish High Holiday Season

Posted on September 13, 2022

This section is full of timely and evidence-based practices to apply in your teaching.

  • UDL/Accessibility: The general premise behind UDL is fairly easy to understand – give students options for how they access and engage with course materials, as well as options to show what they’ve learned. It’s a bit more challenging to understand how each of the 3 UDL guidelines work, and how to apply them to our course content. The Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning’s (CETL) UDL Guidelines video shares a detailed explanation of what each guideline means, and how they impact student learning through removing barriers and increasing ways for students to succeed.
  • Inclusive Teaching Tips for the upcoming Jewish High Holiday Season: With the upcoming Jewish High Holiday Season consisting of several distinct holidays including Rosh HashanahYom KippurSimchat Torah, and more, Assistant Director of NC Hillel Link and UNCG Religious Life Chair, Vicki Cathcart (vjcathca@uncg.edu), has created an excellent resource of teaching tips to support students during this time. In particular, these are the days that work is forbidden beginning sundown the prior eveningSeptember 26, 27, October 5, 10, 11, 17, and 18, 2022. Please be flexible and attempt to not schedule quizzes, large projects, and exams in these time periods if possible (especially during Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur). If it is unavoidable, please make accommodations for the Jewish students so they are not penalized. Click here to add Jewish holidays to your calendar or view future dates.
  • VOISES Panel Takeaways | Students Experiencing Disability and Chronic Illness: There was a wealth of information shared from our student panelists with implications for teaching and learning. In particular, students shared that they appreciated when staff and faculty reached out to them personally and confidentiality to put them in touch to provide needed flexibility related to attendance and assignment deadlines and connected them with support services such as OARSRec WellnessTRIO programs and Counseling Services. Read this full summary for more ways faculty can support them in their studies by understanding the many issues they are dealing with daily. Please consider registering and attending future VOISES panels.
